What kind of jobs can PhD holders and postdocs do?

博士号（PhD）をとった人や、ポストドクター（ポスドク）として研究している人には、いろいろなキャリアの道があります。
People who have a PhD or are working as postdocs have many career paths.
ここでは、大学、会社、行政（ぎょうせい）、フリーランスなど、4つの道を紹介します。
This article introduces four options: universities, companies, government/public organizations, and freelance work.
① 大学・研究機関ではたらく｜Work at universities or research institutes
● テニュアトラック（大学の先生になる道）
Tenure track (becoming a professor)
• ポスドクのあと、助教→講師→准教授→教授と、すこしずつキャリアアップ。
After a postdoc, you can become Assistant Professor → Lecturer → Associate Professor → Professor.
• テニュア（ていねんまで働ける安定した仕事）をもらえると安心。
Getting “tenure” means you can work until retirement.
• でも、テニュアをとるのは難しく、きょうそうが多いです。
However, getting tenure is very competitive.
● 特任（とくにん）教員・研究員
Fixed-term researchers or project-based positions
• プロジェクトごとの仕事。きかんが決まっています。
You are hired for each project. The work has a time limit.
• 研究ひ（お金）を取れれば、きかんをのばすこともできます。
If you get research funding, the job may continue.
● 海外の大学・研究機関
Universities and research institutes overseas
• アメリカ・ドイツなど、ポストが多い国もあります。
Countries like the US and Germany have more positions.
• 英語で論文や発表ができることが大切です。
It’s important to write and present in English.
② 企業ではたらく｜Work in companies
● 企業の研究職
Research positions in industry
• 製薬、IT、AIなど、博士人材をほしがる企業もあります。
Fields like pharma, IT, and AI hire PhDs.
• 大学から生まれたベンチャーで働く人もいます。
Some work at university-based startups.
● コンサルタント・データサイエンティスト
Consultants or data scientists
• データを読む力や考える力を使います。
You use data skills and logical thinking.
• 研究の知識をビジネスにいかします。
Use your research knowledge in business.
● 知財・特許（とっきょ）関係
Intellectual property / patent work
• 発明や技術をまもるしごとです。
You protect inventions and technology.
• 弁理士（べんりし）の資格があれば、もっと専門的な仕事も。
If you become a patent attorney (“benrishi”), you can do more specialized work.
③ 行政・公的機関ではたらく｜Work in government or public institutions
• 科学や教育に関係する「政策（せいさく）」をつくります。
You help make policies for science and education.
• 科学コミュニケーターとして、人々に科学をわかりやすく伝える仕事もあります。
Science communicators explain science to the public (museums, media, NGOs, etc.).
④ フリーランス・起業する｜Work freelance or start a business
• 自分のスキルで、コンサルタントやライター、翻訳者などとして働く人もいます。
Some people work independently as consultants, writers, or translators.
• 研究のアイデアをビジネスにして、会社を作る人もいます。
Others start their own company using their research ideas.
